Week 3 Discussion Question

Week 3 Discussion Board Question

I learned many important things from completing the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Training. First, I have become aware of the significance of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and their influence in either approving, changing, or disapproving research projects. Second, I learned the importance of maintaining confidentiality of data as well as removing identifiable, personal, private information. Maintaining confidentiality is crucial as failure to do so may place the human subjects in harm. And finally, I learned about the three different types of reviews. I learned that an exempt review includes items such as educational research and use of surveys, while an expedited board is inclusive of materials such as drugs and/or specimen. A full board is necessary when research does not qualify as an expedited or exempt review .

I clearly recognize the rationale and necessity of protecting human subjects upon conducting research. Research is an important component of new discoveries potentially benefiting science and society, however it should never be conducted at the expense of or damage to the subject(s) involved the process. In this instance, beneficence is necessary as it balances foreseeable risks with potential benefits.
